BUT, during this stressy week I received a small box of hardcover copies of "House of the Patriarch," Ben January's excursion to the so-called "burned-over district" of upstate New York, in quest of a young lady who may or may not have been kidnapped by a phony religious cult. (And the burned-over district was a hotbed of genuine religious activity at that time, some of it deeply spiritual, some of it deeply strange). For years I've wanted to write about that time and place: about why that one small area would give birth to Mormonism, the first organized movement of feminism, the Seventh Day Adventists, the current form of spiritualism, a slew of smaller cults and communes... and was, incidentally, the birthplace of L. Frank Baum. (And had some of the WEIRDEST folk beliefs I've ever run across!)
The book is available now on Amazon Kindle, and will be out in hardcover in early January.
