Not keeping up
For the time being, I'm going to have to de-friend a number of people on the list - I'm simply getting behind in posts. There is absolutely nothing personal in this. I just need to clear the list a little. And, since I don't put blocks or filters into smaller and smaller lists, pretty much everything I post is public to everyone. (I see that "New in your Inbox - 426 new messages!" and know that on a good night, i read maybe 80. It makes me feel like a complete failure.)

I'm a bit overwhelmed right now; my editor asked me to re-write about 150 pages for the second time (plus the other 200 or so that I didn't even get to the first re-write on), and everything seems impossible. And it's been one of those days of trying to buy a new microwave and a new suitcase, and visiting two big-box warehouse-like stores with long lines, awful parking, and giant mobs of people... and having streets blocked off between here and there. The usual. (Driving home last night, both freeways that route from one side of The Hill to the other - and there are no other routes - had wrecks on them, at 10:45 at night) Since I started teaching, it's as if I use up all my People Points on Wednesday nights. The little blue gauge down at the lower left-hand corner of the screen is on empty. I need a Potion of Restore Proximity.

I did administer my first test of the semester, and am as usual wondering, "What part of Tell me Who or What this was, Where it lived or took place, When it took place, and Why It's Important - repeated on at least three distinct occasions - did you not hear? Did you miss the place where it's Written on top of the Exam Paper?" It's disturbingly clear that a lot of these people have no idea how to read for content... if they're even attempting to read at all. (I will not even go into the issues of spelling and grammar).

Back to work.

Just so you know... I consider my journal something people can subscribe to, or not, and I don't have drama-angst over "friending" or "de-friending." I'm honored that you were subscribed for even a little while there. (And I'm assuming, since you hardly know me from any other random fan at Arisia when you were Guest of Honor, that mine is going to be pruned. *grin*)

I would like to, well, wave at some unabashed fangirling I wrote in my journal, if it would make you feel at all better today. The short form, since you're busy: Thank you, for your books with rich, evocative descriptions that are not infodumps. They give me something to aspire to in my own writing, and appreciate as a reader. Also, Dead Water kept me nicely distracted when I was ill recently, and that alone would merit a great deal of gratitude on my part.

I hope that your day... week... month gets less overwhelming for you soon!

I teach online. Around 50% of all problems with assessment items is that they've not read the resources, instructor responses, or even the question.

Which leads me to wonder - both about the online course and my Wednesday Night Follies - WHAT DO THEY THINK THEY'RE IN THE CLASS FOR? What do they think they're SUPPOSED to be doing? Hasn't anyone, in the twelve years or more of their so-called educations, EXPLAINED to them that the way to learn is to pay attention to the instructions?

Having re entered education after a good many years, I think the problem is not that no one reads the instructions - I think it has more to do with having learned all of whatever it is they're learning and just spewing it all out onto the page. They would be much better off starting by writing everything (relevant) in their heads at the back of the answer book or wherever before they start; that would clear their heads enough to be able to tailor their answer to the question. Works for me - lol!

Stumbled across this site a couple of weeks ago - what a joy to get to know you better! Don't worry about "friending" or "de friending" - your unlocked posts are a great read.

I am happy just to be able to read your unlocked posts so please don't angst over de-friending me

Just so wonderful to hear a little bit of your life (and the kudos I get when I mention "ah yes... I read my favourite authors LiveJournal regularly" denotes either a very good thing or (more likely) that my friends are high in geek quota)

Take care of yourself

I'm honored that you kept me on! I know I've been posting too much.
I hope that tomorrow is not so overwhelming- I find that tea always helps make my day less stressful! *sends you virtual rose tea*

I feel your pain with the spelling and grammar...

And regardless of whether or not I stay on your list, I'll continue to read your unlocked posts with great enjoyment. I was in graduate school (the first time) when I read Time of the Dark in one go on the from Portland to Seattle.

I've been fan ever since. It's fun to read about the ins and outs of the writing process as well as the mundane life of one of my favorite authors.

Wow, I'm really glad (and somewhat surprised) to see I'm still in your friends list, given that I'm mostly good for animal information. I'm hoping I'll formally get into the library science program that I am applying to, and be able to talk about that more.

Good luck with the editing. I sympathize with the correcting issues. I'm sorry to say I taught science for two years, and found that the job was only a source of stress.

Feel free to unfriend me if you want. I mainly read your blog to see what book you're currently working on.

I know what you mean about the Politeness Gnome that lives inside many people, saying, "Respondez S'il Vous Plait! Send a thank-you note! Read all the Comments in your LiveJournal and come up with pertinent replies!" The problem is that there are no cues known in LJ that suggest moving towards wrapping up a conversation, so people end up like Chip and Dale trying to out-polite one another.

I do not know what it's like to have 426 Comments, though. :-)

Not. Simply 426 new Friends Messages - all the stuff on the pages of various Friends, about THEIR pets and the weather in THEIR part of the world... Which I am interested in. It's like being licensed to look through windows into peoples' lives.
But, too much to keep up with.

I didn't know LJ could be set to send you friends' posts, each in its own message. Live and learn.

I know what you mean by looking through windows. Walking at nighttime and looking at houses, I sometimes see through the sidewalk windows of those who apparently don't care that they're visible and so don't close their curtains. It has much the same effect.

It's not a special setting; I just mean, when one goes onto "Friends" and there's the posts of everyone on my friends-list: you, and ro_anshi, and rhj, and ankhorite, etc etc... all 400 or so of you. Having fewer friends = reading all of them instead of just the most recent 40 or so. I suspect in future I'll rotate people on and off my Friends-list, because I AM interested in everyone's lives... I just don't have time for my OWN life (what there is of it).

You're a very giving person, it seems to me. I certainly won't be offended when and if my blog goes off-the-list.

By the way-- and you probably know this already-- almost all LJers conduct purges of their Friends List every so often, so it's an accepted practice.

But yes, I too like to walk in the evenings, and see people through their windows. For awhile I was walking early in the mornings, and loved to see the lights on in the darkness, where people were getting ready for work. (I did this because I was told I needed more exercise, though I was doing 45 minutes in the afternoons already, and I couldn't cut further into work-time. After three weeks I GAINED a pound and a half and caught a cold that held on for two and a half months.)(I now opt for extra sleep instead, when I can).
